Starting a Movement
I am starting a movement. It will be a very important and very pleasurable movement. I call it “Incommunicado.” Many of you are familiar with the word. You may recognize its root word as “communication” but may be confused by the “in” prefix, because in this case “in” means out. Incommunicado means “out of communication”, not connected to any communications technology, reachable only by human contact. I was born in 1950 and have spent a great deal of my life incommunicado as a natural way of being.  Most people over 30 years old were the same way. We didn’t grow ...

Read Me
Everything that I say on the radio or write here is based on my own personal experiences. The things that I suggest are all things that I do myself. If you haven’t already noticed, I am a person that has given a great deal of thought to many things and I am confident that what I offer can work for most of you and that I have rigorously tested the ideas that I present. However, I do not insist that my ways are the only ways that work. I also don’t believe that my ways are the “right” ways. This ...

Feed Your Head
What you put in your head is much more important than what you put in your stomach.  It is odd that people can be very fastidious about what they eat, but pay little or no attention to what they consume mentally.  An easy illustration of this occurs in homes and lunchrooms around the world as people eat their carefully chosen, dietetically correct meals while they watch cable news. They seek to rid their food of contaminants but do nothing to rid themselves of the televised contaminants like violence, disease, and issues that evoke strong negative emotions. What you put in ...

Squeaky Wheels
Most of you have heard the expression, “The squeaky wheel gets the oil.” This is generally used as a rationalization for complaining. This is also the operating principal behind most commercial news operations, particularly in regards to “pundits”. (You might rephrase it, “The squeaky wheel gets the attention.”) Any mechanic will tell you that if the wheel squeaks more than 50% of the time, it is time for the squeaky entity to be repaired or replaced. If not, the consequences could be dire if the wheel falls off.  Our news media is full of squeaky wheels. The amount of people ...

Operating System for the Brain (OSB)
A long time ago someone referred to the brain as an organic computer. This lead me to thinking of superimposing basic computer concepts over the everyday operation of the human brain. This can be a way for some people (not everyone) to learn how to get better performance out of their minds and by extension, better lives. It is my exprience that one of the most important things that anyone can do is to pay attention to your thoughts and to learn to guide your thinking towards what it is that you want. This will be a frequent concept in ...

Worrying
You are trying to sleep and you keep thinking thoughts that distress you. Let's say you are worrying because a loved one is out and they should be home by now. Thoughts of car crashes and violence come easily at these times and can become extremely distressing.     Using your OSB, mentally drag any negative or worrisome thought to your mental trash can. You can see it get fat with your uncomfortable thoughts. Then hit your mental "Empty Trash" key and bingo!.... they are gone! The trash can is now empty and your uncomfortable thoughts are vaporized. There is ...

Memory
People frequently say to me that they are getting older and their memory is failing them. Many times this will come from people who are only in their 40’s! This happens often when we talk of music from the past. They will say something like 20 years ago they could name every album by their favorite group but that now they can’t. They see the failure to quickly remember something that they used to know a long time ago as a failure of memory due to aging. I tell them that they are prematurely aging themselves and simply point out ...

Downloading
This is a good one and very easy and pleasurable to do. The only rigor involved is just reminding yourself to do it. Whenever you encounter anything joyous, download it! It’s a beautiful day. The sun is shining, the air is cool, the birds are singing, etc., while you are standing there enjoying it, download! Picture that graph, or bar, or circle or whatever computer download icon you prefer. Picture it filling up with the pleasure and appreciation of something. Download it, put it on your mental hard drive for later use. Make that feeling of appreciation for something good ...

Anger #1
This may be one of the most important of the Incommunicado blogs. If you are an angry person, you may want to read this everyday until you feel relief. Anger is an indicator. It is just like a warning light that pops on in your car and tells you that something is wrong. Whenever you feel anger that means that something that you do not want is confronting you and is distracting you from what you do want.   Once anger occurs it is of utmost importance to cool off and then decide on a course of action. Anger is ...

Anger #2
In my earlier blog about anger, I stress that when you get angry, the first thing that you must do to successfully fix your situation is to stop being angry. You will make much better decisions about what to do when you are calmer. I realize that many people think; “How can I stop being angry until the situation that angers me is fixed?” You can do this and it is very simple. Turn your attention away from what it is that is making you angry. This after all, is the basic function of anger. Continued anger is the voice ...
